Consultation days

Reception hours

 First visit: 8:30am–12:00pm (8:30–10:30am for ophthalmology)
 Return visits: 8:30–11:00am
Reception is open after 11:00am for patients with an appointment.

Non-consultation days

Consultation is not available on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, and year-end and New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3).
Each clinical division may have its own non-consultation schedule for weekdays.
Please check the outpatient consultation days before your visit.

A patient making his or her first visit to the Ophthalmology or Psychiatry and Neurology division must obtain a referral and schedule an appointment in advance.
A patient making his or her first visit to the Dermatology, Otolaryngology, Urology, or Orthopedic Surgery (Spine Outpatient Clinic) division must obtain a referral.

*5: Obstetricians are on duty. Patients looking for a gynecologic consultation are encouraged to schedule their visits for Monday or Wednesday.

Map of outpatient ward (facility information/medical outpatient ward)

If you are visiting the Hokkaido University Hospital for the first time, please come between 8:30am and 12:00pm. Upon arrival at the outpatient ward on the 1st floor, complete the Consultation Application Form with all of the necessary information. Please turn in the completed form to the first-visit reception counter at window No. 3, 4, or 5. At the counter, indicate which clinical division you wish to see, and provide your referral from another medical institution.
To receive insurance-covered medical treatment, you must present your health insurance card at this time.

Patients with Patient Registration Cards (ID card) seeking a first consultation with a different clinical division from the one in which they were originally registered are considered first-visit patients; thus, they are required to undergo the first-visit reception procedure. If this applies to you, please check in at the return visit reception machine on the 1st floor and wait to be called near the first-visit reception counter (window No. 3, 4, or 5).
The first-visit fee will apply to those patients returning for consultation after an interval of three months or more.

If you are not sure which clinical division is best suited to your needs, please refer to Information on Outpatient Consultation Days and Information on Clinical Divisions.
If you are currently receiving medical attention from another medical institution, you must tell your doctor that you intend to seek a consultation at our hospital and obtain a referral.
Please note that we are not able to answer any telephone inquiries.

Special charge for patients without a referral from another medical institution (non-insurance covered medical treatment fee): For patients visiting our hospital for the first time without a referral from another medical institution, a special fee of 3,240 yen will apply (in addition to the first-visit fee, if applicable).
Patients are strongly encouraged to obtain a referral from another medical institution.


Return visits

Patients with a Patient Registration Card (ID card) can simply check in using the return visit reception machines in the outpatient ward on the 1st floor.
A waiting ticket will be automatically issued if you have an appointment.
If you do not have an appointment, select the clinical division you wish to see, and a waiting ticket will be issued.
After receiving the ticket, come to the outpatient waiting room of the relevant clinical division and wait to be called.
Patients seeking a consultation for the first time in six months or more are required to undergo the first-visit reception procedure. If this applies to you, please wait to be called near the first-visit reception counter (window No. 3, 4, or 5), as indicated on your waiting ticket. The doctor will decide according to the results of your medical examination if the first-visit fee should be added to your medical bill.
Please present your health insurance card at your first visit of every month.
If there have been any changes in your health insurance status, please notify us at window No. 10 of the reception counter.

Forgot to bring your Patient Registration Card (ID card)?

If you are a returning patient, please come to window No. 3, 4, or 5 of the reception counter.

Calculating your medical bill

After the consultation, please come to the payment counter (window No. 7, 8, or 9) and get a reception number ticket. It usually takes 10–15 minutes to calculate your bill. Please be seated until your number appears on the electrical display.

Paying your medical bill

Please pay your bill using the automated cashier machines located in the outpatient ward on the 1st floor. The machines accept both cash and major credit cards.

Making an appointment for your next visit

If you scheduled an appointment for your next visit at the end of the consultation, you will receive an appointment reminder, regardless of the necessity of payment, along with a detailed statement of your medical bill and a receipt from the automated cashier machine.

Using your Patient Registration Card (ID card)

You will need to present your Patient Registration Card (ID card) at check-in when you get a blood sample taken or undergo a radiological examination. Furthermore, you will need to present it at the payment counter (window No. 7, 8 or 9). Please have your card ready at these times.
