No smoking

Smoking is prohibited on the premises of Hokkaido University Hospital since July 1, 2006.

The premises include not only the buildings, but also the parking lots.

Smoking significantly affects health. It is pointed out as a major factor causing various cancers, including lung cancer, pharynx cancer and larynx cancer, as well as emphysema, heart disease, complications of pregnancy and many other diseases. Smoking does not only have a harmful effect on smokers, but also on people around them through secondhand smoke.
Accordingly, the Health Promotion Act was established in May 2003, and requires that measures to prevent secondhand smoking should be taken at social and public facilities that are used by many people.

Our hospital has also advanced antismoking measures in the buildings since July 1, 2004, but they failed to stop secondhand smoking on the premises near the hospital entrance.
A hospital is a social facility where health is valued above anything else. With our social mission to protect the health of patients, we went ahead and prohibited smoking on the entire premises of the hospital.

This measure does not only apply to patients, but also to their families and visitors. We hope that visitors to Hokkaido University Hospital will take this opportunity to understand the need to quit smoking and lead a healthier life. Thank you for your cooperation.
