Emergency Medical Care

Emergency medical care system

Under the emergency medical care system of the City of Sapporo, Hokkaido University Hospital has organized an around-the-clock cooperative system as a tertiary emergency medical facility, contributing to emergency medical care for Sapporo residents in particular, and Hokkaido residents in general.
Our hospital’s emergency medical system provides care to critical patients who cannot be handled at primary and secondary emergency medical facilities, and provides advanced medical care for critically ill patients with serious conditions related to multiple clinical fields who are brought by ambulance or Doctor Heli (helicopter ambulance).
 
Primary emergency medical facilities
Medical institutions (hospitals) that provide medical care to emergency patients, such as injury/disaster emergency hospitals, holiday/nighttime emergency hospitals, Saturday afternoon emergency hospitals, the Nighttime Emergency Medical Center run by the Sapporo Medical Association, and the Oral Medical Center run by the Sapporo Dental Association; these are announced in newspapers, etc. as emergency medical facilities.   
 
Secondary emergency medical facilities
Medical institutions (hospitals) that provide medical care to emergency patients requiring hospitalized treatment, and who cannot be properly handled at primary emergency medical facilities  
 
Tertiary emergency medical facilities
Critical care and emergency centers that provides medical care to critical patients who cannot be handled at primary or secondary emergency medical facilities. There are three such facilities in Sapporo: Sapporo Medical University Hospital Advanced Critical Care and Emergency Center, Sapporo City General Hospital Critical Care and Emergency Center and National Hospital Organization Hokkaido Medical Center Critical Care and Emergency Center. Our hospital’s emergency department also serves as a quasi-tertiary emergency medical facility.  
 

Emergency and critical care and end-of-life care

Hokkaido University Hospital has established the basic policies on emergency and critical care and end-of-life care at the Emergency and Critical Care Center as follows:
