Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine

Greetings

With the philosophy of “restoration of all human rights,” the Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine aims to provide rehabilitation that maximizes the ability of people with disabilities, encourage patients’ independence and improve their quality of life (QOL), unlike conventional organ-specific medical care.
Healthcare reform is now being promoted to deal with increasing numbers of elderly people and people with disabilities, and rehabilitation is highly valued in all medical setting, including the acute stage, recovery stage and maintenance stage.

Outline

Medical care system

The Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine was established at Hokkaido University Hospital in 1996. It was certified as a general rehabilitation facility, has a ward for rehabilitation and boasts one of Japan’s largest rehabilitation facilities with the highest-quality staff.

Treatment policy

Rehabilitation is conducted based on evaluation and the prescription of a training program. The details of the training program are prescribed based on evaluation during examination, electrophysiological evaluation using electroencephalography, electromyography, etc., exercise physiological evaluation using a motion analysis system, etc., and evaluation of higher brain function using neuropsychological tests, etc., and nerve block therapy, electric/magnetic stimulation therapies, eating/swallowing training, cognitive rehabilitation and other medical rehabilitation approaches are followed.

Areas of medical care

Diseases and all physical and mental disabilities due to aging are treated at the rehabilitation department. We provide medical care at a higher brain dysfunction specialty outpatient clinic and an eating/swallowing and oral care specialty outpatient clinic, as well as magnetic stimulation therapy, nerve block therapy and training in prosthetic limbs/rehabilitation devices.

Consultation hours

Consultations by a doctor are provided to new and returning patients on Monday through Friday mornings. Returning patients can also make an appointment in the afternoon. Outpatients who visit the hospital for training have to undergo evaluation by a doctor.
